Summary
Because of the tighter finances people are trying to save money by making their food go further. An FSA survey of nearly 2,000 people across the UK suggested more than half were trying to make better use of leftover food and they were ignoring use-by dates, and kept leftovers in the fridge for long periods of time. The number of cases of food poisoning is highest in the summer as the warmer weather means germs can grow at a quicker rate and each year there are around 70,000 recorded cases of food poisoning in England and Wales. If you want to keep your food longer than the advice from Andrew Wilson of the British Dietetic Association would be “Always follow good food hygiene rules when preparing and storing any high risk foods such as meat, fish etc.”

First impression I got from this article was “look
out, leftovers are dangerous!” It seems almost like leftovers are suddenly the
greatest threat for your health and the greatest evil in the world. I have been
eating leftovers my entire life and I have never had food poisoning or what so
ever. Of course, I agree that you mustn’t eat food that have been in the fridge
for too long and you have to keep in mind that use-by dates are there not just
for fun. So, leftover food is not dangerous but the way people are ignoring food hygiene rules is.
